    A word from D-Boy:

"While these examples of our first few original songs are definitely a little more polished, i want anyone who hears these studio tracks to also have acess to recordings of our live shows, so my solution is for all of our studio releases to be accompanied by a live release. The live sets will consist of a collection of live recordings from performances played throughout the period that the accompanying record was being written, arranged, and recorded. We will also include jazz standards and occasionally contemporary covers."
    -Dboy, Wax Logic

Our live shows are where we really do our best work. Alot of it is loose, funky, laid back....."feeling the moment", improvisation, and allowing for spontaneous energy to influence how we spund.
Our first studio effort, The Self Titled EP, was made possible by a lot of different people working together: musicians (in addition to the ones performing on the record), audio engineers, MC's, Club Owners, Friends, Family, and Fans all motivated me to get this record done. I took an extremely generous amount of time with it: we started recording the first tracks in October of 2016 at January Studios on Carrolton, just north of Dallas. While this digital release is slightly premature, as we have some.mastering tweaks still to knockour beforw we press hard copies and publish it for Spotify and other major streaming outlets......it is not at all any less of an exciting and monumental occasion for me and this band. Collaboration IS the foundation of this project. Blending the styles of music we love the most, working with good friends and amazingly talented artists, and being able to provide a live music experience that is, for me any ways, extremely fun to do.....but these shows have also been the most cathartic live music experiences i have ever had. Playing HipHop is probably the last thing i would have pictured myself doing 10 years ago, but this entire process of creating a band, a sound, an image, a style, composing this exciting music, producing this EP, experimenting, forming a concept, and establishing a reputation as a talented musical crew has felt 110% natural every step of the way. It is a privelidge to make this stuff.

My gut tells me this is the way for me to go, and has since day one.
Since we began playing, we have included works from Portishead, The Beatles, Billie Holiday, Wayne Shorter, Soulive, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, The Meters, Lettuce, Erykah Badu, and a slew of other nods to our jazz musical background, our love for funk, soul, and R&B--- and of course for hiphop. Most of the artists in our group have much to repay the city we have long called Home-- Denton, Texas-- a City whose residents have embraced what it means to support local music, and why it is necessary; most of the artists in Wax Logic are established in their own right on their own before the group was even remotely an unclear and undefined desire. Unsurprisingly, we have also crossed each others paths for years as we pursued our own musical accomplishments, and when i found myself back in Denton after 10 years of touring, teaching, playing in other people's projects, i knew that i could rely on the guys who joined me: they have the work ethic, the talent, the drive, the creativity... the musicians i am able to plau woth, literally to write for, are ALL amazing. The MC's who contribute to this project are all genuinely down to take part in this giant experiment i have cajoled them to join me on, which is called Wax Logic. They deserve so much credit for this groups' continued support in this Music and Arts Mecca of North Texas, a city that has always had the reputations of legendary ex-inhabitants to boast about, and one of the world's most prestigious centers for the systematic study of America's first totally indigenous breed of music: Jazz.
Outside of the daunting and seemingly impossible standards UNT has declared we ought to strive for as professional lifelong musicians learning jazz, Denton has many other music scenes which exist entirely independent of the Jazz program, oblivious to the pressure which exists within it. The punk scene. The diy scene. The hpuse show scene. The open mic scene. The busking scene. The metal Scene. The indie rock scene. And the HiP HOP scene, which i have always been impressed by. My Squad homies in Wax Logic, Ian Harrison and Pudge Brewer, have been rapping in Denton since I have been playing in Denton, which is as soon as I got out of High School in 2005. They were the founding members of the gip hop groups Vortexas and Fab Deuce, respectively. I have been collaborating with Pudge since those days, so this is not our first time blending our styles together and seeing that it could work quite well. That was the golden idea from day one: really include elements of Jazz and HipHop in this project, going into the direction of chill hop which is now some of the most consumed music on the planet--- but also representing elements of funk, blues, soul, and R&B, even of Psychedelic Rock. I am someone who HAS to play music for sanity. It is therapy for me. So i am always writing thongs, scheming ideas for bands, etc; this is not that. This is the most fulfilling music i have ever worked on continuously, because it is constantly presenting me with challenges in composition, in improvisation, in aesthetic dynamics and abstract experimental ideas like sampling with a live band, or a group playing with the goal of sounding like 2 samples being blended together as a DJ would mix them. Or maybe when we have GiGi, my lovely fiancè, sing Jazz standards in French, or have Johnny Jung (our keyboardist) play guitar-- or we have World Class horn players join us on stage, and guest DJ's scratching records ovee our organic grooves: i knew three things starting out: This was an ambitious project. It would be well received in a city with an underground hip hop scene and nationay recognized jazz program. And we would do things musically that no one else was doing. I was not prepared for how hard it would actually be to meet goals i had set as targets, which were nothing more than aural hallucinations i had heard in my mind's ear. I didnt know how to make them happen, or if they even could be made. But there has been a noticeable absense of any pressure to rush anything in this group. I would rather take all the time i wanted to, so i know i gave myself the space to explore options, try different ideas, and develop better material. The sense that we are pushing the evolution of music forward y buildong on a pf yhese elements of what were handed tp us is a comforting reminder that this is exactly where i need to be as an original musician right now.
